Access to Death, Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD). and Salary Continuance insurance is an important benefit of legalsuper membership.
What default cover is available?
Employer-sponsored members receive four units of Death and TPD cover (without having to provide evidence of health), provided they are ‘at work’ when their cover commences and have joined legalsuper within 180 days of commencing work with a legalsuper employer.
If you are not ‘at work’ when your cover commences, or have joined outside of 180 days of commencing work with a legalsuper employer, you will still receive four units of Death & TPD cover, but your cover will be Limited Cover.
Limited Cover will be replaced with Standard Cover at the expiry of 12 calendar months from the date your cover commenced, provided you are ‘at work’ at that 12 month period.
Personal members automatically receive $250,000 of fixed-sum Death (including Terminal illness) and TPD insurance cover (without having to
provide evidence of health), which excludes preexisting conditions.
Spouse members do not receive any automatic cover, as they are required to apply for cover. Spouse members of legalsuper members will not be provided
with automatic cover.
However, spouse members may apply for Fixed Death only (including Terminal
Illness) cover. To apply for this cover, you need to complete a detailed Personal Health Statement, which is available from legalsuper upon request. Cover will be provided subject to underwriting by OnePath.
Spouse members are not eligible to apply for TPD insurance. All other conditions of insurance are the same as those which apply to personal members, except for commencement of cover, which will be the date of acceptance by OnePath.
Insurance for key events in life
Employed members (Employer Sponsored Division) can apply for additional insurance on the occurrence of certain life events. These events include - buying a house, increase in mortgage, marriage, birth or adoption of a child or a dependent child commencing school).
Transfer existing insurance cover
legalsuper members are able to transfer insurance cover currently held with you may have with any other life insurer to legalsuper.
Self employed members joining from 1 August 2011
Self-employed members (Personal Division) who join from 1 August 2011 are provided $250,000 of fixed dollar death & total and permanent disablement (TPD) insurance. Self-employed members include Barristers or Partners who are not employed.
Change between fixed and unitised cover
Members can elect to change between fixed cover and unitised cover.
Fixed cover is a lump sum chosen by the member that remains fixed as the member ages, however the premium will increase as the member ages. Unitised cover refers to a fixed premium where the amount of insurance cover declines as the member ages.
Applying for additional insurance:
To apply for additional insurance complete a change of personal details (Superannuation) form.
