Find your lost super

There are many ways a superannuation member can become lost to their fund.  For example sometimes the incorrect contact details are held after a member moves house, or changes employers, or their name changes.

Super funds have differing criteria for determining when a member is lost but, generally, an account's status changes ‘lost’ when your statement is returned to the super fund meaning that the member cannot be contacted.

The first step in trying to find lost super is to contact your old super fund(s):

Step 1: Dig through your records and try to find an annual statement from your super fund(s)

This is probably the most effective way of finding your lost super – a little effort can go a long way to finding your lost accounts.

Step 2: Check online by visiting the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) SuperSeeker service
The ATO has its SuperSeeker search tool, available at ato.gov.au/superseeker or by calling 132 865. Only accounts deemed to have been lost by the super fund will have been reported to the Tax Office.

SuperSeeker is a tool that will look for your lost super and instantly provide you with possible matches.  It is free to use and is available 24 hours a day.  To use SuperSeeker you will need your tax file number (TFN).  Click this link to use SuperSeeker:

Step 3: Check if your super has been transferred into an Eligible Rollover Fund (ERF)
An ERF is essentially a super fund that holds lost super.  Below are links to some of the more prominent ERF’s.  You can search to see if they have an account for you online or call them direct.  Try them all:
a) AusFund Australia's Unclaimed Super Fund (1300 361 798)
b) ERF (1300 788 750)Supertrace
c) AMP ERF (1300 300 288)
d) Australian Eligible Rollover Fund (1800 631 600)
e) National Preservation Trust (1800 331 210)

Step 4: Make a list of the companies you previously worked for and call them to confirm where they paid your super to
This will probably be your last resort. Your previous employer may have archived their payment records and depending how long it has been since you worked with this employer, they may have disposed of these records. However give them a call and whilst it may take them weeks to get back to you they may have the answer.

Step 5: Search the State Lost Monies registers and ASIC:

NSW – The Public Trustee of NSW - Unclaimed Monies Search
QLD – The Public Trustee of QLD - Unclaimed Monies Search
VIC – The State Trustees of Victoria - Unclaimed Monies Search
WA – The Public Trustee of Western Australia - Unclaimed Monies Search
ACT - The Public Trustee of Australian Capital Territory - Unclaimed Monies Search
TAS – The Public Trustee of Tasmania - Unclaimed Monies Search
SA - The Department of Treasury & Finance South Australia (08) 8226 3601
ASIC – Australian Securities and Investments Commission ASIC - Unclaimed Monies Search
