The 2007/08 financial year -
our performance compared to other funds
Last financial year Australian and overseas share-markets fell heavily, largely off the back of a global credit crisis. This led to negative investment returns being the norm for most investors both in Australia and overseas. It’s a sobering fact that with the sole exception of Toronto, all major stock exchanges fell in 2007/2008.
When considering the performance of super funds last financial year it is important to see them in the context of these difficult worldwide investment market conditions, and also in the context of their longer term performance.
Below are some other important points to consider when evaluating your super fund’s performance in 2007/2008:
1. Remember that most super fund members enjoyed double digit returns in each of the four previous financial years.
2. Despite challenging investment markets, legalsuper performed well relative to other funds. Our one-year return to 30 June 2008 for the moderate option was -6.15%.
3. Super is a long term investment and its performance is best evaluated over the longer term. The impact of a negative return in 2007/2008 will be short-lived. Over the last five years legalsuper’s average return for its default Moderate investment option was 10% per annum.
legalsuper is a Platinum-rated industry super fund and will continue to help you maximise your retirement savings by returning all profits back to you while simultaneously keeping costs low.
