legalsuper partners with Mental Health First Aid

legalsuper and Mental Health First Aid International (MHFA), a global leader in mental health first aid training, have announced a three‑year industry partnership to support the mental, financial and professional wellbeing of the legal community.
The partnership reflects a growing recognition that mental health conditions are no longer an emerging risk but one of the most significant challenges facing the legal profession today. In fact, they are now one of the major causes of Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) and income protection insurance claims.
Mental health has implications not only for individual wellbeing but for career sustainability, workplace culture, and long‑term financial security.
legalsuper has been supporting access to MHFA training programs since 2019 through legal industry partners, with nearly 900 professionals participating to date.
Our new direct partnership marks a significant step forward by enabling legalsuper to promote MHFA’s evidence‑based mental health training, resources and support directly to members, employer partners and the broader legal community.
The partnership is designed to build on the legal sector’s collective capability to respond to mental health challenges, strengthening workplace wellbeing and resilience.
A proactive approach to member wellbeing
Paul Northey, Chief Member Officer, legalsuper said:
“Mental health is one of the most complex and growing challenges facing the community, including the legal profession. Its effects extend beyond mental and physical wellbeing, often impacting financial wellbeing through reduced productivity, lost income and increased financial stress. Through our partnership, we are helping Mental Health First Aid invest in early intervention across the legal industry equipping individuals and workplaces with the skills to recognise when someone may be struggling, respond with confidence, and support each other before issues escalate.”
Angus Clelland, MHFA International CEO said the organisation was proud to partner with legalsuper to improve access to peer-to-peer support throughout the legal sector:
"Legal professionals work in demanding environments where psychological wellbeing is critical. This partnership gives us an opportunity to work alongside legalsuper and the legal sector to make Mental Health First Aid training more accessible, while supporting the profession to embed these skills into workplaces, professional development and the next generation of legal practitioners."
Supporting better outcomes for members and employers
MHFA’s evidence‑based training programs are designed to improve mental health literacy, reduce stigma, and provide practical skills to support colleagues, clients and peers experiencing mental health challenges.
The partnership aligns closely with legalsuper’s broader approach to member wellbeing, including its collaboration with insurer Zurich to provide holistic support for mental, physical and financial wellbeing.
By focusing on prevention, early intervention and workplace capability, legalsuper is helping to create a resilient legal profession, build mentally healthy workplaces so practitioners remain supported throughout their careers.
This includes improving member wellbeing outcomes, equipping employers and firms with the tools to respond to mental health challenges and reducing the long‑term impact of mental ill‑health on career longevity, professional performance and financial security.
